What's in a name?
25 Nov 2011
Have you noticed? Most of the commercials in our newspapers, T.V. ads, and junk mail no longer refer to the coming season as ’Christmas’ but rather as ‘the holidays?’ Of course, if the ads were an attempt not to offend anyone, there might be some merit in it. But the festivals of other faiths such as ‘Diwali’ or ‘Eid’ are not treated in this manner, probably because there would be a public outcry, or possibly violence. The fact is that there is now a concerted effort to dumb down the Christian faith. The truth of this assertion can be seen in many seemingly unrelated incidents. The Australian government recently introduced legislation that did away with the way we have reckoned time for centuries, by the abolition of the terms "B.C” and “A.D.” which firmly fixed our modern history as being calculated from the birth of Jesus Christ. They substituted instead the terms “ Before common era” and “Common era.” This is patently nonsensical, since in many countries, the way of reckoning time in terms of history, is not in common with the way we have always done things in the West – in what we know as Christendom.. The Jews reckon from the supposed date of creation, whilst Far Eastern countries have their own way of recording the passing years.
The fact is that there is now a concerted campaign to eradicate all public recognition of Jesus Christ and his place in history. Christmas for us is the event above all others, for it marks the moment in time when God became incarnate, that is, He took human flesh and lived on earth with us. For Christians, the birth and death of Christ have such an importance, that it is indeed offensive to us when attempts are made to remove His memorials from our consciousness, for they are not just holidays, but occasions of the deepest worship of our God. The opponents of Christianity are very vocal, and we should be equally so. We need to tell the owners of businesses that use these occasions to promote revelry rather than reverence that they stand in danger of losing Christian customers. By so doing, we are a strong voice for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Emmanuel, God with us. The excuse that they give of not wanting to offend anyone will not wash, for it is deeply offensive to Christians to refer to Christmas as just another holiday.
So, let us all celebrate the birth of Christ reverently, joyfully, and where necessary, vocally. May He bless your family celebrations this Christmastide and all those near and dear to you! HAPPY CHRISTMAS!
